No matter how hard I try, holiday time always turns out to be a bit of a binge period. Even though my family sticks to fairly healthy holiday foods (er…mostly, anyway), we eat a lot more than we normally would. Do you have a similar experience or do you have a stronger will?
Call me crazy but by the time New Year rolls around, I’m actually looking forward to detoxing a bit. Nothing drastic really, fasts and crash diets make me feel terrible and I’m very doubtful about their healthfulness and long term effects.
Besides, I love eating! So I’m always looking for ways to lighten up my diet after the holidays without having to restrict it much. As a result, what I mostly do is load up on fruits and veggies, cut down high fat desserts and sauces and eat a bit less overall. If you’d like to cleanse the non-drastic way yourself, have a look at my favorite recipes for this purpose. You’ll see they look more like a colorful feast than a stomach-growl-inducing, bland menu.
I like to stick to green smoothies and fresh fruit when detoxing. That way I can be sure I get a huge amount of vitamins and minerals first thing in the morning. Every once in a while, I opt for chia or flax pudding instead to load up on the heart-healthy omega-3s.
You get all the vitamin C, magnesium and folate you need from this smoothie and it tastes amazing.
Very refreshing and vibrant and packed with superfoods, this smoothie is probably my favorite way to start the day when detoxing.
